There's a chap at my place of employment sporting a Ph.D. from International Christian University ( not the one in Japan as far as I can tell) Any info on the quality/reputation of this school and how rigorous the Ph.D. might be in comparison to RA or other accredited seminaries ? I am suspicious that is is a "church-basement" type operation.

There a number of schools either named this or have some form of it in their names, like Adonai International Christian University. (http://www.adonaiuniversity.net/) If it's this one, it's not accredited by an agency recognized by the USDoE and it looks like it has created its own in-house agencies to present validity of its programs.
The Ph.D. and Th.D. programs look very weak and simple to "earn." The counseling programs are sorely lacking. Easy degrees, I think.
Perhaps you could get some more info about which ICC his degree is from.
I do like this on their site:
AICU degree programs are not designed to meet any local, state or national license requirement. If you are seeking a degree is to be licensed by a local, state or national agency, please check with the appropriate licensing agency for the acceptance of our degree; or for employment, please check with your employer for the acceptance of our degree before enrollment in our program. Our purpose is to train born-again Christian men and women for the work of the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. AICU is a nondenominational institution, and our degree programs are not designed to meet the ministerial credential requirement of any particular organization.

What makes you suspicious, RA? Does the chap in question have difficulty constructing a grammatically correct sentence? :o :D :o

I just don't know anything about this institution or its quality. While some unaccredited religious institutions are very rigorous, some are really only glorified Sunday schools. I have never heard this colleague refer to his dissertation--most Ph.D.'s can't shut up on this topic even after years-- and looking at the internet site of this entity, I didn't get the impression of really demaning academic rigor. More like "are you born again, brother? Amen, you're a counselor now." I am suspicious of that sort of thing since I have multiple store-bought D.D.'s and ordinations, but I ain't no spiritually legit rev. even though quite legal enough to be my own church's pope.
