This is great news.

The UC and CSU systems have been planning a whole assortment of joint-doctoral programs in education. Most of the UC and CSU campuses are participating in at least one of them. Unfortunately, the state budget crisis has put a lot of these schemes on hold.

So it's good to see this Davis, Sonoma and Sac State community college administrator's doctorate actually taking off.

But what's really interesting is this:

Courses will be offered through Friday and Saturday classes, weeklong seminar classes in the summer and distance learning to accommodate working professionals.

If this turns out to be an actual short-residency DL program, that will be a real (albeit belated) innovation for UC. As far as I know, the whole 10-campus UC system only offers one DL degree program at the present time, a masters in criminology out of UC Irvine. No doctorates.

I don't know how much of the program will be available through DL.

Here's the program's web page at UC Davis: http://education.ucdavis.edu/academic/edd/delcra.html

Here's a snippet:Program delivery methods will include traditional classroom instruction as well as distance-learning components to further support working professionals’ needs. Approximately one third of courses will be taught utilizing the distance-learning model introducing technology as an integral part of the learning process.

Well I think it's good they are training the future leaders and administrators using a distance learning model and technology and as they state it as "...integral part of the learning process." Perhaps in the next few years the graduates will inject new DL thoughts and attitudes in the CSU and UC systems.
