From the Associated Press: A court ruling expands the range of titles that defines Italy's social pecking order (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/11/26/international1328EST0530.DTL)

A 3 year degree program earns you a doctorate. People with degrees from 4-5 year programs will get to use titles such as "doctor of research" or "teaching doctor."

From a country where "dottore" is the equivalent mode of address to "sir" in the USA, regardless of the qualifications of the addressee.

In Newfoundlandese, a fishing culture, a sign of respect was to call the old guys "skipper", or so I am told. Probably because most of the old guys were skippers, the social equivalent of an Italian dottore.

Ciao John.
I've been fortunate to visit Italy on eight occasions and a couple of years ago ended up having to visit Brescia Hospital, with a septic finger. Brescia Hospital (Brescia is half-way between Milan and Verona) is recognised as the best in Italy. Well, in no time at all I was being checked out by two doctors and three nurses. Both doctors spoke very good English and the nurses looked great! I was there for a couple of hours and received the best treatment imaginable - all completely free.
The more doctors in Italy the better I say - plus lots of nurses, of course.
Saluti and cheers.
